Fragments.network Bounty (Up to $200)

Fragments: Decentralized platform for micro-task apps.

Our aim is to enable micro-task services to expand, by combining an open platform built on blockchain, with incentives for developers who extend it, thus building a transparent platform that is easy to access and build upon for everyone, which also rewards developers who are able to create successful services on top of it. With Fragments, Developers earn tokens by creating micro-task applications. Companies
and individuals who want to outsource tasks (Requesters), are connected to human workers (Annotators), who use the applications to complete the tasks and earn tokens. Fragments will be a mobile-first decentralized platform, which incentivizes developers to build future micro-task applications that we cannot imagine today. Our goal is to create a trusted platform, by implementing identity-management and agreements on the blockchain and providing self-hosted solutions, while reducing costs and barriers to entry for all – requesters, annotators, and developers.

The first use case.

To demonstrate the value of the Fragments platform, ignite more ideas and give future developers a template, the Fragments team will develop the first micro-task app on top of the platform, to facilitate data collection and annotation. On the requester side, the app will be fueled by Artificial Intelligence and other technologies that require vast amounts of structured labeled data. On the other hand, for annotators, there will be a strong push for mobile environment, so that the app can tap into the growing number of people in emerging economies, who have a smartphone and internet connection. This will also deliver a comfortable experience even on the move and use the extensive data acquisition capabilities of today’s smartphones (camera, microphone and other sensors).

What makes Fragments unique?

Services and solutions that provide human intelligence already exist. For example, Amazon Mechanical Turk, CrowdSource, Cloudfactory and CrowdFlower provide an online workforce; Kaggle and Qlik DataMarket sell structured and labeled datasets; and companies that need their data annotated privately, often use in-house teams to do so.
The Fragments platform aims to make the barrier-to-entry lower for both annotators and requesters and increase the efficiency of the market by workforce optimization and decentralization. Below we elaborate on the unique propositions of the Fragments platform

Open Decentralized Platform Incentivizing Extensions

Encourage to extend. Most of the available platforms that offer micro-task workforce or trade data are proprietary and/or closed. However, even for the small minority that are open (e.g. Gems), independent developers have little incentive to actually extend the platform, since there is no profit in it, unless they count themselves among requesters or annotators as well. Fragments’ goal, is to create a micro-task platform that is not only open an easily extensible, but actually incentivizes extensions by enabling developers to take a small revenue cut, if their apps they build on the platform are used by other parties. The bare-bones Fragments platform is free to use with no commissions. Developers can offer their apps for public use and decide what commission they charge for using them. The rest is left to the free market – nobody is forced to use a particular app, if the commission it takes is too high compared to the value it offers.

Mobile UI/UX

Fragments is by design extensible, and hence anyone can develop and release an annotator application for any desired platform, even a smartwatch. However, since (as described above) we realize the importance of mobile platforms (and lack of focus on them from some of the key players in the micro-task field, such as Amazon Mechanical Turk), we aim to strongly support mobile app development. Our first extension module focused on annotating data for AI, will be concentrating on mobile and we will release mobile Software Development Kits (SDKs) that will make it easy for developers of applications, to target mobile environment. As a result of this, there will be an increased emphasis on mobile UI at Fragments, to lower the barrier to entry for people in less developed parts of the world and allow people to work wherever they are, without having to own or set up a computer, e.g. while commuting on a train, or waiting in line somewhere.

Enterprise-Ready Security

Organizations have developed crucial policies on how customer data is manipulated and stored. We address these challenges with the following design:
Annotator identification. Annotators are identified by their Ethereum addresses. To increase worker trust, Fragments will bind annotator identity to the Ethereum address using services such as uPort2 or Civic3 . This way, there will be an increased confidence that one worker can set up only one account.

Self-hosted and decentralized solution. Data is a critical digital asset. With Fragments, requesters can set up and manage their own nodes in their secured environment, that store tasks and distribute them among workers. Hence, there do not have to be any middlemen for the data transfer, just in-house servers connected to workers directly.

Annotator fitness. Workers gain fitness as they reliably complete tasks among requesters. Besides the trust tiers described in the Annotator Identification section, requesters can also choose the minimal required fitness of annotators. Hence, more trusted annotators are able to earn more and all annotators are further discouraged from trying to open multiple accounts (since the fitness would be lost).

Limiting dataset exposure. Datasets have the most value as a whole – obtaining only a few data points usually makes little sense. To limit the trust we are putting in workers, with Fragments it is possible to set a threshold on how large a portion of one task batch an individual annotator is able to access. Hence, an attacker would have to compromise a large number of workers in order to obtain a sizeable part of
the dataset.

Blockchain-based agreements. Before workers are allowed to participate in sensitive tasks, an agreement (e.g. a Non-Disclosure Agreement) has to be accepted and written to the blockchain (using an Ethereum smart contract).

Prevention and monitoring. To further increase security and in order to make further distribution and the use of task data more difficult, we aim to incorporate reasonable techniques such as watermarking (both visible and invisible)
